| The Pi Network is relatively new compared to industry giants such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. March 14, 2019 Pi Network was founded by three Stanford graduates, including Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis.
Pi Network's goal is to create a decentralized and user-friendly cryptocurrency that can be mined on mobile devices.
Given the relative mining difficulty of the Bitcoin protocol, only individuals and companies with significant resources can verify transactions in exchange for network tokens. The Pi Network aims to build a persistent mineable protocol for smartphone users.
Despite the low barrier to entry, the Pi Network has all the benefits of a blockchain-powered initiative. Users can mine Pi coins on their mobile devices by downloading the Pi Network app and creating an account. Mining Pi coins does not require capital investment, any special equipment or technical knowledge, users only need to verify their identity and sign in on the app every day to earn Pi coins.
The Pi development team has ensured that they are not relying on the oft-criticized Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus algorithm to be future-proof. Instead, the protocol runs on a novel consensus mechanism called Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA). This is a breakdown of the famous Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) used by the Stellar blockchain.
The Stellar network relies on companies and institutions as node validators, while Pi's FBA allows ordinary individuals to use their devices to secure the network while earning rewards.

| Pi Network has grown rapidly since its launch, with over 22 million registered users by early 2022. However, the Pi is still in beta testing and its developers have yet to release a fully functional version of the Pi Network. As such, Pi is not yet listed on any major cryptocurrency exchange. |

| Although the Pi Network is still under development, blockchain projects have seen widespread adoption. The protocol had over 100,000 active users in June 2019, and today, the Pi Network has over 33 million users.
Pi Network has a strong presence in countries such as India, the Philippines, and Nigeria. The Pi Network team also announced plans to release a decentralized application platform (DApp) that will allow developers to build and deploy their own applications on the Pi Network.
